What is the Personal Statement?
If you’re applying to colleges that accept the Common Application, then the Personal Statement is the main essay you’ll submit with your Common App.
It needs to be 650 words or less, and that’s a hard limit—do not exceed it.
Schools that don’t accept the Common App (e.g. Coalition App colleges) might ask you to write similar main essays. In addition, many Common App schools require additional supplemental essays. This article does not apply to those other kinds of essays—just to the Personal Statement.
Have the Common App essay prompts changed in 2026?
Nope. The seven Common App essay prompts have remained the same since 2021, and this year is no exception…
2026-27 Personal Statement Topics
…so here are the prompts in question, which still apply for this year’s admissions season:
Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
Does it Matter Which Common App Essay Prompt You Write about?
Nope—in the sense that admissions officers do not have a preference for certain prompts. All they care about is the essay itself. Plus, see that seventh prompt on the list? It invites you to “Share an essay on any topic of your choice.” That’s a catch-all that invites you to write about literally anything you want, in the event that your desired topic doesn’t seem related to prompts #1-6.
HOWEVER!
All prompts being equal does NOT mean that all topics are equal. The best essay topic for YOU will show off your growth, self-insight, and one or several of your core values as a person.
Some students might be able to do that by writing an essay about collaborating with their Grandma to invent the world’s best chocolate chip cookie recipe. Other students might have very little of interest to say about that same topic. Some students might be able to write a killer Personal Statement about frogs, or stargazing, or a camera lens their parents got them for Christmas one year. Other students might produce a real snoozer of an essay about those same subjects.
Which leads us to the question:
